Diabetic brings sugar down with Natural Remedies

Natural Remedies for thyroid, GERD, kidney stones, and diabetes My name is Michael D’Amico and I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in April, 2007. I am driven to use natural methods for the purpose of controlling my type 2 diabetes. When I was diagnosed in April of 2007 my sugar was at 210. Today my early morning sugar levels range from 104-113.

More and more people have diabetes these days. I believe it can be controlled if you really want to. The western diet with artificial flavors, chemicals and ingredients is something you need to be wary of. I believe in using natural remedies with a standard diet with a visit to Subway and Arby’s with 30 minutes of late evening exercise to help maintain healthy sugar levels.

There are studies out there that show the western diet is attributable to higher insidence of diabetes, cholesterol, and tooth decay. How can someone easily integrate healthy native foods into todays’ fast pace

lifestyle? Why not try Chia seeds? Yep the same Ch-Ch-Chia you here on TV commercials around Christmas time. Chia can be put in any drink and can be used with almost any food and is very healthy for you. Chia has been used with your oatmeal, yogurt, cereal, coffee, orange juice, workout drink, etc.  can be substitured for flour by using 30% less and it is gluten free. It has been known to help diabetics because it slows down the metabolization of carbohydrates into sugar.

I am also a runner and take 2 tablespoons of chia seeds with an 8 ounce glass of water prior to each race. Chia seeds have been known to hydrate cells which help me get ready for each run. Last year when I really needed to bring my sugar down after being diagnosed I did the following: I did an intense evening workout for about 1/2 hour. I ate a diabetic healthy breakfast and lunch. Dinner was 3 ounces of Chia seeds and a 1/2 hour workout brought my sugar down from 125 to 115. Doing the same routine, but a 1 hour workout would bring my sugar down from 122 to 106.

I am 47 now with a sugar level of 107 as of this morning and hope to keep improving my running times and general health. To improve in 2008, I now include 2 tablespoons of Acai with the 2 tablespoons of white chia seeds in a 8 ounce glass of water prior to a race. I have been taking natural remedies including Chia Seeds, Acai, yerba mate, white tea, organic cinammin, and stonebreaker in order to keep my sugar levels normal, get ready for this running season, and keep improving my running times.

What I use to feel full

What I use to feel full

When trying to keep my weight down,  or lose weight it helps to feel full. This is true especially at night. It is very easy to do very well during the day, and than at night binge a late night snack.

First, chia seeds are low calorie. There is only 139 calories in a 1 ounce serving.

I take white chia seeds with every dinner meal to feel full. 1-3 teaspoons with a 8 ounce drink, usually does the trick. I have run many races from 3-5 miles, when at the end with all the food is there for the finishers, like donuts, energy bars which are close to candy bars, I was able to walk away.

When White Chia comes in contact with water, pudding, juice, yogurt etc. they grow to 9x their size. They will also help with protein and Chia is good for the digestive system because it is a hydrophillic colloid.

Man with Diabetes runs the Niagara Falls Marathon

I could have used the worlds tallest mans long legs to finish this. Here is a picture of me at the Ripley’s Believe it or not Museum.

The Marathon started in Buffalo at an art museum. The race finished at Horseshoe Falls in Canada. I used chia seeds to get through the first 12 miles of race and 3 jelly beans every 10 minutes with water stops to get through the remainder of the race. I also used Gatorade instead of water at mile 20 and 23.

I was happy to complete my first marathon since being diagnosed with diabetes in April of 2007. It was great to have a goal to work toward to, to keep my diabetes in control. Niagara Falls Marathon did a good job with plenty of support from volunteers at mile markers 12 through 24 who cheered you on and it helped motivate you to get to the next one. The finish line was the Skylon Tower (Space Needle) which I first saw from 10 miles away. We finished battling rain and high winds which you can probably see in the below picture.

The next challenge for me is to get though Christmas and the Holidays. With Thanksgiving coming I will have plenty to say.

Akron 1/2 marathon finished by 47 year old diabetic

It was a wonderful day with weather in the 60’s for the Akron Marathon. We all started at 7am. I was late leaving but was able to park within 5 minutes from the start. There was alot of crowd support with roadrunner motivation signs which where distributed by the event. We finished at the Akron Aeros baseball stadium. The key is to finish in good health with everything in the right place. My muscles were a little discombobulated going up the stairs, but I got a massage there and they put everything  back in place.

WARNING – Runners do not try this. Everybody is different and it may not work for you.

I have lots of experience with chia seeds. I have been taking chia seeds prior to running for 5 years now, not only to slow down the metabolizing of carbohydrates to sugar, but to avoid cramping because chia seeds are good for digestion and they are very good for hydration. I personally hate being weighed down by water bottles and hate to slow down for water stops. Yesterday, I had my 4 tablespoons of chia seeds in an 8 ounce bottle of water. I figured this would keep me hydrated for at least 6 miles without water stops.

I was going to bring some extra chia seeds in a plastic bag to take in 1 mile intervals after mile 6.  I got there late, getting out of the car with less that 10 minutes to the start of the race.  I remembered that I forgot the seeds at the start line. It was too late to go back to the car. It helped that the weather was in the high 60’s. I was able to do the whole 13.1 miles with no water stops relying on the 4 tablespoons of chia seeds in a 8 ounce bottle of water to stay hydrated. The results are not in yet, but I figured I saved 1-2 minutes off my time by doing this. If the temperature was higher I would have to make water stops after mile 6.

I will run the Niagara Falls marathon next month and this made for a great run for me to get ready. I still need to do a 20 mile run to get ready.

Blogger diabetes sugar levels and managing stress case study

Stressful trip dealing with financial problems

Stressful trip dealing with financial problems

I have heard from other diabetics and they have mentioned how difficult it is to control sugar levels when they have to deal with stress. I am going to do a personal case study from August 1rst-12th where I am going to be in a very high stress situation.

It will take me 8 hours to fly where I need to go. I have never been here. Upon getting there, I will meet with two relatives who shall remain nameless. They no longer can afford their mortgage. They have 2 cars which are in such bad condition, they can not drive them here. I will need to sell them or donate to charity. I do not know the condition of the cars because their phone lines may be down and I cannot contact them.

I will gather up their records, set up shipment of some personal items to be trucked back home on a shoestring budget. My sugar levels range from 101-115. I will be taking my sugar levels daily in the morning. On the 11th, we will fly back with 3 cats in another 8 hour plane trip and than do a 2-1/2 car trip home.

I figure this will help me in the future when referencing stress and diabetes control. After this trip is over, I will go back to my usual routine of a normal diet with natural remedies.

I have signed up to run Niagara Falls Marathon Sunday, October 29th. I am inspired by other professional athletes with diabetes like Jay Cutler, quarterback of the Denver Broncos. This is the first marathon I have run since being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in April of 2007.
